One in four people suffer from bad breath – halitosis – mainly because of poor oral hygiene.  The bacteria that coat the gums and teeth release sulphur compounds, causing the bad smell.  Bad breath can also be a symptom of gingivitis; strong smelling food such as garlic and onions, in addition to smoking, can make it worse.

Occasionally bad breath can be a sign of other medical problems, for instance an infection of the throat, nose or lungs, sinusitis, bronchitis, diabetes, stomach conditions or kidney or liver problems.  A good routine of mouth-care is necessary to eradicate the problem and brushing the teeth regularly must never be omitted.  Flossing is advised, to avoid the incidence of plaque, and the tongue should also be cleaned.
