During your excursions to buy pencils and paper and cute backpacks, you might have forgotten something that can save your child's life: a visit to the dentist.
Earlier this year, I wrote about a 12-year-old boy in Prince George's County, Md., who died because bacteria from an abscessed tooth traveled to his brain. So considering that in Kentucky and throughout the nation tooth decay is the single most chronic childhood disease, a dental visit is just as important as the three Rs, or even more so.
Members of the Student National Dental Association at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry want to do their part to make those visits happen.
Lauren Massey, president of the UK group, said about 15 students and five faculty members will perform free dental exams for all comers at this weekend's Roots and Heritage Festival in downtown Lexington. It is the second year for the effort...
