Q - What is your most successful Perio Protect® case to date?
A - I have a lot of cases that are absolutely amazing. One man who comes to mind was a class 3-4 perio case with 9-12 mm pockets, lots of recession, abscesses, and some tooth mobility. In hope of restoring the health of his gum tissue and stabilizing his teeth, we treated him with scaling and root planing, laser debridement, and Perio Protect. Perio Protect helped eliminate the abscesses and heal the tissue. After 3 months, the tissue was so stable around the teeth and his pockets were all within a 3-4 mm range. He continues to use Perio Trays® for his long-term maintenance. Another patient – male, 32-year-old, smoker – with a remarkable story was referred to our office for an implant because tooth #8 had type 3 mobility. His treatment time lasted approximately 6 weeks and included gross debridement, scaling and root planing, splinting teeth 6-11, adjusting the occlusion on the lower anterior (where there was about 75% bone loss) and Perio Protect treatment. The patient also quit smoking. One of our biggest concerns was the abscess on tooth #8. Perio Protect was instrumental in controlling the bacterial infection in the gum tissue around this tooth and #8 has recovered beautifully. It is an unbelievable recovery with solid teeth now. He may have his teeth for a very long time if he keeps up with the Perio Protect treatment for long-term disease management. Q - Are you getting these kinds of excellent results generally or are these exceptional cases?
A - We have 100% success with patients who use the Perio Trays as directed, including patients who are class 2-3 perio with bone loss. We get good results even when patients do not use their Perio Trays in strict accordance with the Perio Protect Method. Q - Have you encountered difficulties implementing the Perio Protect Method™ in your office?
A - Insurance coverage. That is about it. Everybody wants it and understands the need for it, but not everyone can afford the
treatment without coverage. Q - When patients choose Perio Protect® treatment, how do you introduce them to it?
A - My time is very limited. I present Perio Protect as part of the entire treatment in the beginning at the same time I present any and all treatment options. I show examples of the Perio Trays, briefly explain how they work. Q - What does Perio Protect® allow you to do that other conventional treatments do not?
A - I almost always use Perio Protect in combination with scaling and root planing. When Perio Protect is added to the treatment, the tissue response is so much better and pocket reduction is dramatically better than scaling and root planing alone. Perio Protect makes it possible to control chronic inflammation that could not be controlled with other treatments. Even 4-6 mm pockets are not bleeding on probing when patients use Perio Protect. Without Perio Protect those pockets would bleed with probing. Q - How have your patients responded to Perio Protect® treatment?
A - If patients use Perio Protect, the treatment works. Even when they do not use it as often as I recommend, it is working. In fact, it may be helping more than our patient’s mouths. One of the first patients to try Perio Protect in our office was a man in his early 80s with emphysema, chest pains, and a lengthy medication list. We explained links between perio and heart disease and inflammation problems and recommended that he try Perio Trays to improve his oral health. It was difficult to get started, even to get the impressions to have the trays made was a challenge. But he followed the treatment. Six months after he had begun using Perio Protect, he returned to our office without his oxygen tank, a medication list cut in half, and reduced blood pressure. He looked like a totally different person. The doctors have conferred by phone and believe the medications delivered with Perio Trays may have contributed to his improved condition. Q - Is there any additional information you would like to share?
A - With Perio Protect there is a lot less bleeding on probing. Once scaling and root planing is completed, the bacteria often take over again. Perio Protect controls the bacteria. It maintains your gains and offers long-term control over the disease. I think any dental office that is currently treating perio in house would benefit to incorporate Perio Protect into the office. |
