The Perio Protect Orkos Award is given to dentists and hygienists who demonstrate excellent case study reports for the treatment of gum disease, also known as periodontal disease (gingivitis or periodontitis). Dr. Stoker's gum disease patient presented the additional complication of have a very strong gag reflex and the patient refused all invasive procedures (scaling, root planing, deep cleanings, or surgery). This meant the treatment offered was the delivery of medication with a special FDA-cleared non-invasive dental tray (Perio Tray). This tray is very similar to a mouth guard in its appearance and feel, but it is specially designed to gently deliver medication into the area between the gums and the teeth, to kill the bacteria that are hiding in what the dental specialists call "periodontal pockets."
